Ashore in Singapore—Civic District

Published on 08 Jun 2023

Museums, modern architecture and family fun await you in the Civic District. Here’s our guide to the historic neighbourhood.

Exhibit at the Fort Canning Park
1 Fort Canning Park

Spend the morning with a quiet stroll at Fort Canning Park, a popular haunt among history buffs and nature lovers alike. Before the British landed in Singapore, this site was known as the Forbidden Hill, where Malay royalty once ruled.

Pay a visit to the Spice Garden, where you can learn about the herbs and plants used in our local cuisine, or journey into the past at Battlebox, an underground military bunker that was at the centre of British command during World War II.

For lunch, indulge in flavourful pastries and brunch at the Fabulous Baker Boy—Their pancakes are bound to be a hit with kids and adults with a sweet tooth.

Family enjoying at the National Museum Singapore
2 National Museum of Singapore

Next, make a detour to the National Museum of Singapore, where our nation’s rich history comes to life for kids and adults alike.

Families visiting with their little ones can immerse themselves in the beauty of Story of The Forest, an installation that transforms historical renderings of nature into three-dimensional works of art. Alternatively, pay a visit to Growing Up, a whimsical space that will give you a peek into the lives of Singaporeans’ childhoods throughout history.

If you’re shopping for souvenirs, be sure to drop by MUSEUM LABEL—the museum’s store—to peruse a range of quirky, art-themed memorabilia.

Family having fun at Super Park Singapore
3 Suntec City

Spend the rest of the afternoon at Suntec City—A massive mall filled with activities for all members of the family.

Gents can shop for classic threads at Benjamin Barker and The Shirt Bar, or admire the timepieces on display at Watch Wonderland, while ladies can add sparkle and style to their wardrobes at Lee Hwa Jewellery and Sans & Sans.

Teens looking to channel their inner Lebron James or Tony Hawk at the Game Arena’s Street Basketball court or the Skate and Scoot World, while activities for younger tykes include pedal cars, a tube slide and a kid’s gym.

If you’re feeling peckish after working up a sweat, we recommend dropping by the Suntec City Mall basement. Encircling the Fountain of Wealth is a trove of restaurants, selling everything from Turkish kebabs to pizza and Chinese dim sum (bite-sized portions of food served in steamer baskets or small plates).
